Passiflora morifolia is a perennial vine/climber in the Passifloraceae family. Its native range is from Mexico to southern tropical Americas. The familiar name is Woodland Passion Flower. This Passionvine is not an edible species but ornamental instead. It will grow and be happy in a container. A vigorous vine perfect for a fence, arbor, or trellis. It grows naturally along the forest and in the rainforests. It grows at elevations of sea level to 8,000 feet. It can grow to 20-25 feet long with woody shoots and purple tendrils, which help it climb. The leaves are large and smooth, three-lobed. The fragrant flowers are relatively small, white and light-purple to dark purple. The fruits are purple with orange pulp, which isn’t edible. It prefers to grow in full sun or under glass. It requires an average amount of water daily with some tomato fertilizer once a month. Zones 9-11
Germination
Rub the passiflora seeds with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. Soak seeds for 72 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds and lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 30-90 days.
